Summer skirts are essential for getting through the sweltering summer months. They’re a super-light, for one, and they can be paired with virtually any kind of top—including a white classic tee for day, or a strappier going-out option for night. With summer just around the corner, we’ve already seen a hint at which skirts the stars are wearing. Cue the mini versus maxi skirts debate.

Celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Rihanna, and Hailey Bieber have been stepping out in skirts that range from itty-bitty to extra-long. Which team are you on? There’s benefits to both hemlines. If you’re a maxi skirt fan, you’ll know that the long, breezy style is the perfect way to add a free-spirited, slightly bohemian feel to any look. Earlier this month, Katie Holmes styled a white pleated maxi with a chunky knit. She’s also worn the skirt with dad sandals. For the Met Gala after-party earlier this month, Rihanna also stepped out in her own version of a maxi skirt: She wore a white Chrome Hearts ensemble including a single-button top and floor-length skirt, complete with a high slit. There’s something instantly effortless and undone about a maxi, even when worn as eveningwear.

However, there’s something a little saucier and fashion-forward about a mini. For a date night with Bad Bunny in April, model Kendall Jenner stepped out in Blumarine’s fall 2023 shearling-trimmed mini skirt, which she paired with knee boots and a classic tank. In New York this month, Hailey Bieber also slipped into Prada’s belted mini skirt, paired with an oversized Khaite coat. Whether for day or night, the mini shows skin and makes any ensemble feel a little more sexy. It can elevate a simple tee, and suddenly make it feel like a whole statement. (Riri is also on board with this: She recently sported a leather mini skirt for date night, too.)

There’s really no cons to either silhouette—it all comes down to personal preference and mood of the day. But you’ll definitely need one or the other come summertime, because both are fast emerging as a must-have piece of the season. Why? A-list trendsetters have said so, that’s why!\
