Are “Mall Bangs” Making a Comeback? Dua Lipa Says Yes

La Croisette is carpeted in the trend reveals of Cannes Film Festivals past, the parade of premieres and photocalls calling for major beauty statements. So when Dua Lipa stepped out for the premiere of Omar La Fraise (The King Of Algiers)—in the company of boyfriend and French director Romain Garvas—the pop star chose to honor the tradition with a modern take on Pamela Anderson’s iconic ’90s bangs

Soft and all a-splay, Lipa’s fringe fell well past her eyes, fanning across her forehead and grazing cheekbones with a high-gloss effect. As with many recent bang iterations (and there are many), the style was more about form than function, requiring ample styling and a just-so sort of fall that, when coupled with a piled-high onyx updo—and a slashed Celine gown—felt luxurious and cool. Lipa’s bangs called to mind the fringe of decades past; think Anderson in the ’90s, sporting the decade’s mall bangs with blasts of aerosol hairspray locking every last wisp into place.

Bent on bangs that are sophisticated and just the right amount of referential? Look no further. Mall bangs are equally effective on any promenade—and destined for a summertime reign.
